Army Aviation Support Facility
scopeDue to the aging of Army Aviation Maintenance facilities within Nebraska and surrounding States, the Military Department of the State of Nebraska was selected to provide for a new facility within the central portions of Nebraska. Ultimately, Central Nebraska Regional Airport in Grand Island, Nebraska was selected for the new site. At a minimum, the proposed facility was to house (6) Chinook and (4) Black Hawk Aircraft, 40 full-time soldiers, and 312 traditional National Guard Soldiers. Wilkins Hinrichs and Stober Architects served as the architect.
ImplementationKirkham Michaels’s design services on the project included detailed design of the pavement section using crushed concrete for the base material which provided a cost-effective solution while adding support to the pavement sections; roadway system around the site following defense force protection standards; parking lot design; water/wastewater design, and taxiway/apron design. Kirkham Michael also provided construction administration and observation services throughout construction of the improvements.
ResultsThe project exceeded client expectations by delivering the quality promised, yet coming in under budget. The Army’s Maintenance Facility now serves as one of the Aviation Support Group’s most critical resources.
