KDOT Interstate 70
Moderate Pavement Rehabilitation scopeThe Kansas Department of Transportation hired Kirkham Michael to provide engineering services on a moderate pavement rehabilitation project on Interstate 70 through Lincoln County. The project involved design and construction of over seven miles of Interstate 70 from the Ellsworth/Lincoln county line to the Lincoln/Saline county line. Kirkham Michael evaluated several options for the design including different clear zone and foreslope configurations as well as alternatives for concrete and asphalt pavement. Other value-added design elements included improvements to the side road at the Exit 233 interchange, bridge rail replacement, and the installment of liner pipes on existing corrugated metal pipes.
ImplementationRoadway improvements consisted of a 6” mill with a 6” bonded concrete overlay. The project also included the design of crossovers, a bridge rail replacement, RCB extensions, CMP liners, side road and interchange improvements, and resetting and replacement of guardrail. Other important aspects of the project included grading, concrete inlets, traffic control, and construction phasing. The project letting is scheduled for July 2010 with construction following soon after. Construction is to be finished by November 2011.
ResultsThis project will result in a roadway with improved safety and structural capacity serving I-70 travelers for a 20-year design life.
